Write for us

Open Culture Review welcomes considered pitches about how culture gains meaning through words, objects, rituals, stories and institutions. A strong proposal begins with a specific question and gives readers a reason to look again.

What we welcome

We are interested in clear, self-contained essays and explainers for general readers. Proposals may examine a familiar custom, a cultural term, an object with a revealing history, a recurring story pattern or a question about how an institution presents culture. The subject should allow for context, careful distinctions and a fresh line of thought.

What makes a good pitch

Send a working title, a short outline of the central question, the main point you expect to make and the material or sources you would draw on. Explain why the subject suits Open Culture Review and identify any limits or uncertainties that matter. Avoid pitches that depend on unsupported generalisations, undisclosed promotion or claims of expertise that cannot be substantiated.

How to send it

Send proposals through the Contact page and choose the editorial question option. Include a brief note about your relevant experience if it helps explain your approach; credentials are not required. A proposal is not a guarantee of assignment or publication, and unsolicited full drafts may not receive a detailed response.
